All About Photobiomodulation Therapy

Photobiomodulation Therapy is a safe and effective way to manage pain and inflammation. This non-invasive therapy works at the cellular level, stimulating repair and normalizing cell function.

During the past two decades, extensive research has revealed that oxidative stress can lead to chronic inflammation, which in turn contributes to chronic diseases, including cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, neurological disorders, and pulmonary diseases. The use of red light/near-infrared for reducing pain, inflammation, and edema has been known for almost forty years. Photobiomodulation Therapy reduces oxidative stress and increases ATP, improving cell metabolism and reducing inflammation.

This therapy has been shown to be highly effective for acute and chronic musculoskeletal conditions such as sports injuries, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, neuropathy, arthritis pain, gout, and more. It can also be used to manage pain and inflammation associated with chronic degenerative changes that cannot be healed but must be managed.

The benefits of Photobiomodulation Therapy for those living an active lifestyle are well-known. Among the benefits are more intense and higher volume training, improved muscle strength, reduced post-exercise soreness, decreased injury recovery time, and a faster return to training.

Collagen provides the skin with elasticity, but as we age, collagen production slows, and existing collagen can get damaged due to sun exposure and bad skin habits, leading to wrinkles and sagging skin. However, Photobiomodulation Therapy can increase collagen production, providing beneficial effects on diverse problems from wrinkles to hypertrophic (keloid) scars to burns and also inflammatory diseases such as acne and psoriasis.

Irradiation of the whole body with red light/near-infrared has demonstrated significant improvements in sleep patterns, such as the duration and quality of sleep and an increase in the frequency of dreams.

Although further research is required, there is increasing evidence on the benefits of Photobiomodulation on improving depression and anxiety as a consequence of chronic pain syndromes such as lower back, neck pain, and headaches.

It can be delivered to the entire body using the Firefly Light Therapy TM, a system that targets inflammation and stimulates repair.

Every person’s condition is unique, and their treatment course is as well. Acute injuries and inflammation from muscle strains and sprains, cuts, bruises, burns, etcetera typically show rapid improvement and can resolve in 2-4 treatments. Long-term, chronic conditions can take as many as 10 sessions to get significant benefits, and then weekly or bi-weekly sessions may be necessary to maintain benefits.
